The Sound of Silence

LUMS’ Adventure Society reached Bagh last night. Having had extensive hiking, trekking and mountaineering skills they were ideally suited to help with rescue operations in places acessible only by foot. A phonecall this morning reports that there is hardly anyone alive in Bagh; all they can see are corpses. They hope to find survivors as they explore further within the city. As winter descends upon Pakistan- it’s been raining in Islamabad for days, hailing around Abbottabad, even Lahore is significantly cooler- all we can do is work faster, and pray.

NB: Tents are needed, desperately. Contacts report that people are mobbing trucks, grabbing everything they can. Some people keep returning for supplies and have begun selling them (something that reminds me of Darwaish’s recent post). What is suggested that when you’re putting boxes together, try to make small packages of things together, like a shirt and a pair of pants in one well-tied plastic bag. That way distributors can toss packages at people and make sure more of them receive aid, as opposed to a repeated few. For people planning to go themselves, please bear in mind that the weakest of the survivors often do not receive help at all because they can’t make it to distribution points; if you can, try to seek them out and deliver supplies to them personally.
