@Yahya: I must say, things are definitely getting better :-)

@Faraz: Oh yeah, I credit you for bringing up such an exciting piece of information.

And, Iqbal, then again has a more regional appeal... What do ya say?

@Asma: I must thank an Islooite for bringing the 5th Gift from Lahore!!

@Bulla: Point noted! ;)

I prefer Faiz Ahmad Faiz over Iqbal any day. Faiz's message is much clearer and tangible and he has a real following. His own struggle only gives further credibility to his message.

Iqbal's position was much fluid and he said different things at different times and has therefore in my opinion not as much credence as Faiz. I suspect Iqbal's reverence in even South Asia is not as much as we like to believe and much less in the rest of the world.

Thank You Hasan. Since I was the first one to point out the 4 nobel laureates from Lahore in Metblogs, I am very pleased that this is picked up as one of the gifts from Lahore.

Lahore was, and indeed is, a center of excellence. Just recently a group of students from LUMS won the prestegious Stokholm Challenge Award 2006 - The award is sometimes regarded as the nobel prize in IT !!!

Regrading gifts from Lahore, i believe we must have Allama Iqbal in the list. A scholar, philosopher and visionery of his caliber is pretty hard to find in modern history, atleast in south asia.

Yes Lahore was once famous as a centre of education and intellect in the whole of India... but that was before. Thanks to years of Jamaat e Islami ghunda gardee Lahore educational institutions are in intellectual ruins and so is Lahore. And it will take a long while for it to recover. I suspect Lahore needs someone like MQM (not necessarily the whole package :)) to give it a slightly secular outlook before it will start to intellectually prosper once again.
