Son of Lahore: Lt Col Haroon Islam (Martyred)

In a sad incident (as being covered on IMB), Lt. Col. Haroon Islam embraced Shahadat. He was the commandant of Pakistani Elite Commando force – SSG (Special Services Group). Reportedly, he was on front line working with the troops in intense firing of last night.

Lt. Col. Haroon, joined army in 1988 and started career with Baloch Regiment. He was graduated for Command & Staff College Quetta and joined SSG in 1993. He had splendid military career. Because of his meritorious services, he had been awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. Think of the families of those he killed. being a ssg, im gonna guess that he killed quite a few in lal masjid and else where himslef. think of the orphans and the widows he gave to our society. Being a part of the army, he must have supported their agenda….

@RUKUN: i would disagree with you, he was leading a small operation to make holes in the wall. The holes were meant to facilitate the hostages to flee the area as soon as the terrorists were engaged in firing by army. He had option to send his men for this work but he proved that he was brave and took the lead for this and saved his colleagues from fatalities.

At this point of time, all reasonable and sensible citizens of Pakistan supports a single agenda which is to keep Pakistan clean of this Mullah stuff and the way this extremism is pimping in our society.

Pardon me, but I’ve always thought that ‘Shaheed’ was one who gave up his life for ISLAM, not his country. Have I always been wrong?
Who was the Shaheed in the Gulf Wars?
The Lal Masjid people are as guilty of killing muslims as much as our Army, but who has the right to be called a Shaheed and on what basis?
Yes, the army guy had a family and a mother, just like anyone else. At the risk of being sounding sentimental, where are the life stories and backgrounds of the other victims of this bloody drama? Got a picture of the dead civilians there? Maybe a Utube link? Or our beloved president attending their janazah?

Did you read the same old stories about our Nishan-e-Haider soldiers at school as me, injected into our text-books to love our army?
Did you watch the news a decade ago, where the newscasters went something like “5 bhaarti halaak aur Pakistani fauj kay 3 jawaan shaheed huay”… or the “collateral damages” and “preemptive strikes” on the “insurgents” the last 6 years?
Word are powerful and dangerous. Do we think independently before regurgitating whatever has been fed to us?
the Lal Masjid people may be terrorists but that doesn’t make those fighting them angels either.
I feel sorry for his family and do hope he achieves Jannah because he fought for what he believed in. Let us just say a soldier died in the line of duty because that is what he was getting paid for, and let God be the judge.

@Rukun: Now that’s an opinion. Being part of army, how could he support their baseless agenda?? I was about to write a long comment, but then I presume … You’re intelligent enough to ignore the simple rule of right and wrong … May god be with you and all of us!

As a Muslim who died in the defense of his country,Lt. Col. Haroon Islam is a Shaheed. One can argue about whether it was right or wrong, or how many other people he killed, etc. However, the fact remains that he defended our country, and we should not disparage him.

  9. Fauzan Sohail (unregistered) on July 9th, 2007 @ 2:58 am

The martyrdom of Lt Col Haroon Islam shaheed will not go down easy with the Pakistan Army. There may be those among you who would think of his sacrifice as a joke or insult his efforts to help those trapped inside escape but like I have said on Islamabad Metroblog too: nothing that you nor I could say or do will change the course of events that are about to take place. The same goes for the debate that he is a shaheed or not. It doesn’t matter what you say or dont say. He IS a shaheed and your media and the people who matter the most say so. It’s ironical that we in the armed forces and their families are made heroes one second and the tyrants the very next. Try doing for a day what our fathers and brothers do every day.

Declaring a person Shaheed is not in the hands of poor mortals. It is Allah who bestows this revered title upon His most beloved.

    Here, we are lamenting the loss of every innocent victim of this unfortunate incident. More than 50 people, I hope I’m correct, have died so far. Whom among them are Shaheeds, God knows. For everyone, we can pray;

Inna Lillah he Wa Inna Ilaihe Rajioon’

Haroon Islam died in the line of duty.

What is significant is that he did not stay behind and SHOWED BY EXAMPLE by leading his men himself rather than staying behind and giving orders. Something he could easily have done.

This is something that cannot be said of a SINGLE religous gentleman proclaiming death in the name of Islam.

  13. redsnapper (unregistered) on July 9th, 2007 @ 4:41 am

My previous comment: substitute religion for Islam.

I can’t recall any religious person (Islam or otherwise) leading when life is at stake.

And, please, in response, don’t start quoting from history of a thousand+ years ago.

We all Pakistani are with on Mr.Presdient especially on this issue .These terrorist should be wiped out from Pakistan .First Question how they did get so much of fire power? And how come these people get trained for fighting?
Lal Masjid is no more Masjid it’s a breading ground for terrorism and extremism, Islam never gave of concept of masjid in this way which harbor terrorism and fanaticism. Thank to Allah that lions of Pakistan army launch and operation against these people. For me to tackle these so called mullah is the rite way Pakistan army is doing.

@ Fauzan, be assured they are only a few fanatics who have nothing else to do except spread their hate and ignorance on the net in deffence of the terrorists who are saying such things against the gem of a son of this country. Yes as a citizen of pakistan I do oppose any role of army in politics but the role they play as defenders of this country, surely all of us thank them for that. It is only they who take the bullets on their chest when the country needs it.
I do not condon army’s role in politics “at all”, but for all those jawans fighting for the defence of my country , i am just overwhelmed.

  21. Fauzan Sohail (unregistered) on July 9th, 2007 @ 12:31 pm

@ Haroon. Thank you for sharing my sentiments. I too sincerely believe that Army should not be involved in politics because it has brought us in the army circles nothing but criticism and conspiracies in the long run. 60 years of our country’s history is witness to that. Currently there is a battle going on between Muslims and a mosque is a battle ground. Whether the army is right or those inside the mosque are right in what they are doing… only Allah knows best. But any innocent life lost on either side is a big blow to not only one’s conscience but also to the very image of Islam and its principles of tolerance and justice. May Allah help us all.

guys just think with a peaceful mind, who is spreading terrorism in our society and in our country and who is corrupting the picture of islam ? i think the answer is very clear …

having cloths to the knees, IMAAMA on the head and bear on the face is not islam , islam is the way we live , work and treat others.

Islam does’nt allow us to :

    – kidnap people based on suspicion.
    – hostage kids.
    – hostage women.
    – destroy and burn buildings.

armed forces should take serious action against these criminals and terrorists.

read in the islamic references about topics related to this situation :

    – Masjid Zirar.
    – Fiqh Al-Jinayat.

Brothers and sisters let’s pray for Haroon Islam, who was a fantastic friend and excellent human being. He died doing what he did best; leading from the front, and he saved many in the process including the women and children who were inside the masjid…

Haroon lived up to his promise and oath he took as an officer of Pakistan Army to protect his fellow Muslims… He did not let any harm come to those inside the masjid, not on his watch… That’s exactly what you would expect of Haroon Islam I had the good fortune and pleasure of knowing…

As the commander of troops on ground he could have sent others to accomplish the mission but it was not his style… He always led by example… May Allah give him jannah and make the next life even more beautiful for him… May Allah keep him in the company of angels and shuhada.

I would also like to request you all brothers and sisters to make du’a for forgiveness of all the Muslims who died on Islam around the world. May Allah forgive our sins as an ummah and bring our hearts closer.

Haroon you will be thoroughly missed my man. May Allah keep you in His blessings and shower His mercy upon you for you lived and died protecting the Muslims. You lucky, lucky man.

I don’t think the concept of ‘paid’ army existed in the days of the prophet… people fought for what they believed in.
Now, most of the army officers are there for the Defence of the country… ie. the DHA.
A few questions that have been bothering me…

If our army dictators are so righteous, why is the lalmasjid website ‘banned by PTA’, and why can’t I buy the ‘Military Inc.’ book in Pakistan?
Why can’t we hear the other side of the story and put names, faces and family pictures behind each one of the NON-Army people who died?
Why can’t there be weapons in a mosque, when a mosque was the center of government in the Prophet’s times?
True, there may be many officers in the army who actually joined it for a cause… I don’t know of any though, and I live in the Cantt. I do know that each house in my area is worth more than 10 Million Rs. and besides a few people who actually served (and perhaps died), the majority of the owners just retired from a peaceful military career to be handed over millions of Rs. just like that.
As a taxpayer, I don’t get to decide whether my money is spent killing other muslims or handing out rewards to the old (Army) boys’ club.
Would the proponents of Shahadat by defending one’s country please get the wikipedia definition fixed, they say:
“It is a title that is given to a Muslim after his death, if he died during the fulfillment of a religious commandment, or during a war for the religion.”
and add an “… or belonged to the Pakistan Army” to it?
Here’s a better idea, since dying while defending one’s country and being a muslim are the only two prerequisite of attaining jannah, lets wage war against Afghanistan and Iran… instant shahadat, good for both sides.

{ (Dying while trying to destroy a mosque and killing other Muslims is not a Martyr (Shaheed) } from where you obtained this statement ?? is it from Aqeeda references ???

I’ve asked in my previous comment , please read the Aqeeda , Hadith , Fiqh and History references before giving any illogical statements here.

please go through the following references :

    – Surat Al-Tawba , Quran.
    – Surat Al-Nissa , Quran.
    – Al-Walaa wal Al-Baraa , Aqeeda.
    – Fiqh Al-Sunna.
    – Tareekh al_khulafaa ( Dr. Tariq AlSweedan ).
    – Fiqh Al-Jinayat.
    – Saheeh Al-Bukhari , for AHADEETH related to ALJIHAD.
    – also please find the meaning of word JIHAD in : LISAAN AL_ARAB and see what is the real meaning of jihad in arabic and what is the definition of jihad in islam.

Al-Shaheed : Lt. Col. Haroon ul-Islam deserves the word SHAHADA by all meanings.

AburRasheed will be forgotten in the history books as some who tried to bring harm and disrepute to Islam. This is not the Islam that is in Quran and Hadees. @Amer Mustafa

No Mr Amer Mustafa, this is from Prophet’s (PBUH) saying.

Prophet (PBUH) stated that when two Muslims fight and one dies, both will enter Hell fire. The companions asked him (PBUH) why both? The Prophet (PBUH) replied since the one dead was also intent on killing the other one.

Just for people arguing about the use of mosque, I would refer you to the final struggle of Abdullah bin Zubair (R) the grand son of Abubakr (R), the son of Zubair bin Awwam (R), and Asma bint-e- Abubakr (R) who was besieged in Kaaba and Martyred there.

Who is a Muslims and who is not is for Allah (SWT) to decide and not us. As long as a person expresses his belief in Oneness of Allah (SWT) and bears witness that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the last Prophet, he is to be treated as Muslim.
For this I refer you to the incident of Khalid bin Waleed (R) who killed a person during a fight. Just before being killed, the said gentleman had recited Kalima. However, Khalid (R) interepreted it as his last ditch effort to avoid being killed. When the Prophet (PBUH) heard this, he got upset and said to Khalid (R) did he have to open out his heart for you to belive in his Shahada.

Please refrain from your own interpretations of Quran. Even Shahaba (R) used to go to Ayesha (R) and Ibn-e-Abbass (R) for interpretations of Quran.

May Allah provide peace to this country. And peace to All.

    @Kamran
That’s the hadeeth I was looking for when I mentioned the Gulf War, I remember reading that when I was 8 (no, I did not go to a madrassa, my school had a church in it rather).
The problem with us Pakis is that we can’t survive without heroes… that’s the way we’ve been brought up by our text books and media. We pick sides and the other guy automatically becomes the bad guy.
I have issues with qualifying anyone as (Martyred) in the title, whether its the army guy or the mosque guy. Things are not as black and white as we make them. Jinnah automatically becomes “Quaid-e-Azam Rehamtullah Aleh”, Bhutto and Zia-ul-Haq both become shaheed, depending on your affiliations.
I know for sure there are brothels and bootleggers all over Islamabad. While the mosque guys may be wrong in taking the “law” in their own hands, what exactly is the “law” when an “Islamic Republic” protects prostitutes next to a mosque? Remember that it all started there.
I remember a paki/american guy in the US army who refused to join the forces that were attacking Afghanistan(?) and got a lot of coverage by the american media. Why can’t our soldiers do the same?
If we remove the “Islamic Republic” part from Pakistan, have open bars and brothels like UAE, Instead of fooling our self-righteous selves maybe we’ll get moderated and enlightened and focus on building our nation along the same lines as India and the US. That’s what we want, right?

Lt Col Haroon was a brave person. He lead his troops from the front. TO debate that he is shaheed or not is useless. He did what he was told to do without thinking about his family. He did it to save his country from the so called Mullahs. We dont find any example in Prophets (p.bu.h) where he forced people to accept Islam. Mullah’s are no one to tell what we have to do and how we have to life r life. we all r muslims and we know whats good and whats bad for us and what punishment we will get. We lost a great man who served his country without thinking about his two daughters who are just 4 n 5 years old.

All I am trying to say is it our national loss. What ever happened …we all are responsible as a nation.

    4. No suicide attack attemptd during operation.
    5. No suicide jackets found.

What the hell was this operation all about. I think it was just a propeganda of govt. to get a medal from America. Thats why the day operation was executed, they handed over 2 F-16 s long overdue to us.

Umer> those mullahs did not force others to accept islam. yes u r rite we cannot force anyone to accept islam but every muslim is supposed to ensure the enforcement of islam whether its by hook or crook. Muslims in the early years advanced their armies to spread islam so this means u can take over if u want to spread islam.

For all here saying things about left and right, about dark and light..has anyone thought, what is the most someone can offer to prove his beliefs, HIS LIFE ? HIS BELOVED KIDS ?
Has anyone here writing stuff ever met or seen these people..Col. Haroon Islam and Rasheed Ghazi??
They say the body of a shaheed does not die like we do..it glows and bleeds if u cut it even after days and months, it does not smell bad like every other..Has anyone seen both the bodies after their death??
I saw Lt. Col. Haroon’s body after 3 days of his death as he was burried here in Lahore.
Let me tell all of my brothers with all faith and honesty..His face was fresh like dawn and he sleeping in peace we all want.

    ASIF WROTE July 12:
“Muslims in the early years advanced their armies to spread islam so this means u can take over if u want to spread islam.”

so Islam is spread by sword? Is that correct then?

    Also you wrote:
“enforcement of islam whether its by hook or crook.”
Is that the sunnah of our prophet (PBUH)?

That was a tragic day in the history of Paksitan.

Islam is also spread by sword.
firstly we are muslim and then pakistani.

There is no value of muslim blood in the front of Muslim leaders.

We have killed so many muslims in Wazirastan and other areas of Pakistan and got million of dollars from America. We don’t know who is our enemy and why we killed each other. Is the enemy of America is our enemy.

    so

    think about that

may Allah rest their soul in peace
