Media workshop ended.

A five day workshop was held in the premises of Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) on “Local News & Features for Radio” to sensitize the students (especially for the students involved in Radio) with the trends in news making and feature writing for the Radio.

The workshop was provided with the collaboration of Deutsche Welle, Germany and ICS, Punjab University under the supervision of Mr. Peter Huellen.

Only some selected people were allowed to participate in this workshop. The participants were from the professional Radio channels and from the institute’s own Radio channel i.e., FM 104.6.

“The workshop was about the news making techniques and tips on how to improve your writing skills for the Radio”, said Aeman Ashraf a student of MS Communication Studies (MSCS) in ICS.

After a session of five days, the prize distribution ceremony was held on 6th of July in the Hamid Nizami Conference Hall, ICS. The guest of honor (Chief Guest) was the mayor of Lahore city, Mian Aamer Mehmood.

Short notes were delivered by the guests and the Director as well.

“It’s my first visit to Pakistan and I am quite impressed to see the thirst of knowing in the students over here”, said Mr. Peter. He further added that it was quite difficult for him to adjust in the new atmosphere but the students did great effort to support him and understand him.

Director of the Institute Dr. Mughees Ud-Din Sheikh termed the workshop as a success and acknowledged the participations of different professionals from different FM Stations. He announced that scholarships would be provided to three teachers for higher studies abroad and also announced that five students would also be sent abroad for higher studies, three to Norway and two to Germany. (the names were not announced yet)

“No institution in the world provides international language course in summer vacations but we did it”, said the Director. He further added that the institute has become the resource centre for all sorts of media education. More than 60 media delegations visited this institute in less than one year.

Mian Aamer Mehmood lauded the hard work of the director and congratulated the students on completing their workshop. He said, “The government has increased the grants in education sector and the role of private sector is also commendable, which is showing its results in the form of man power development.”

He criticized the previous situation of education standard and said, “Now the days of pulling others legs have gone. Now there is an environment of sheer competition. You can’t escape instead you have to face it.”

Looks like it’s going to be a big breakthrough for people working at FM 104.6. They already have improved their reporting and made listening a bit lively by adding music which was not allowed previously.

    Long way to go guys!

I have heard FM 104.6 couple of times on my way back home. I guess it had a short on-air time. But it surely based on quality entertainment with responsability. I am unsure how things are now, but I always wanted it to be played 24 hours a day. Can Hassan or Mani share more about them? Good luck everyone who are involved!

It airs now for about 6 hours a day. Am I right Mani?

    @ Opee:

The timings of the FM 104.6 are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Actually the whole content in produced, directed and presented by the students of Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) so..
the department is closed at about 8:00 to 9:00 PM.
The transmitter is of 6 KM radius. It means that only the people within the vicinity of 6 KM can enjoy its transmission.
And one important thing is that it is the first Radio station that any university had, in Pakistan and also in South Asia.
and now the director is aiming at the PU TV and one monthly newsletter.
InshAllah, with your prayers I’ll be able to see it happen before I leave this institute. (hope so..)

the 24 hrs transmission is not possible bcoz their are not professionals…
all of them are students and no student can stay at night as the department is closed after 8:00 PM.
and the budget is also a factor..

Bhai, it is ‘Punjab University’ FM 104.6, then why students from other departments and institutes don’t have any contribution in its programming?? :P
