‘Heart on sale..’

The motorbike was seen at Icchhra Bazaar (Icchhra Market)a few days back which reads in English as;

“Heart For Sale!

Price Just One Smile..”

http://lahore.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/08/DSC01187_filtered-thumb.jpg

So, by considering smile equal to money,I believe, the Lahorites are the most rich people in this regard because they earn this money less but spend more… and the world knows that Lahore is the favorite because of its hospitality and you can also include some other forms of verbal enjoyments {you know.. what I mean! ;)}.

The ‘Green Box’

To prevent the damaged pages from the Quran (the Holy Book) and other ‘Holy Scriptures‘ from being thrown in the garbage or on the roads, the Punjab Quran Board has affixed a number of these ‘Green Boxes‘ around the city in different localities.

http://lahore.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/08/DSC01195_filtered-thumb.jpg

I’ve seen them on the bank of Lahore Canal at different places from Saddar Underpass to Thokar Niaz Baig. I’ve also seen it on the Ravi Bridge near Shahdrah Town.

I’s thinking that why these boxes were only placed near or on the bridges of the canal and even on the river..? Why not near the Masjids (the Holy Prayer Place for Muslims), the educational institutions, in the markets and some other public place..?

How it is possible that a page from within the university or from any Masjid would come on the bridge through air and some person would pick it up and will put it in the box..? 8-|

A Greener Lahore: PHA @ Work

With mission statement “Make Lahore Clean, Bright & Green”, Parks and Horticulture Authority just in seven days planted 19760 trees in different areas of Lahore according to the Jung on 18th August.

logo_pha.gif “PHA was created by merging the horticultural wings of LDA and MCL on Sep 21st 1998. The rationale for the creation of the PHA was to lend focus and autonomy to the Horticulture in Lahore, in the wake of Road Rehabilitation Projects. The main objective behind the creation of PHA was to make Lahore clean and beautiful. PHA is implementing on large number of ways to accomplish its goals. Mr. Kamran Lashari was posted as first D.G. of PHA.”

See more details on their website.

The government would plant more than 150,000 saplings in the city by September 10 and to ensure the participation of citizens, PHA offered free sapling on a phone call and as far as I know 19th August was last date to avail the opportunity. I saw their banners all around Lahore and lets hope they got the best response by 19th from Lahorees.

No Sunday Market On Sunday?

Picture%289%29_filtered_final.jpg
@Walton Road
Walton Road is a well-known crowded road and especially on Sundays the market consisting of different stalls on both sides of this road in picture causes so much chaos. Surprisingly, today I found no Sunday Market there and consequently no RUSH. I wonder if some authorities finally took the step to give this road a break?

Shaan the Gangfather! B{

Where he plays an executive from the classy elite in Mobilink Indigo commercials; a moderate muslim musician who stands up against extremist views in Khuda Kay Liye, he is also there to portray the usual image of a notorious Gujjar Badmash in movies like these…

Peo Badmashan Daa
(The Father of all Gangsters)

One wonders, how come an actor like Shaan transitions between portrayals of two extremes; from a sensible actor to a howling Gujjar!

Paan Mandi - Lahore’s Mini India

If you happen to be an admirer of Indian branded hair-oils, Banarsi Sarees, Vatika shampoo, and Paan Supari from the other side of the border, you need not buy a ticket to Delhi for everything Indian is available in our very own Anarkali Bazar’s Paan Mandi. This particular market is famous for selling Indian merchandise smuggled illegally from across the border and signifies how profitable regular trade between the two rival nations can be.

Daily Times reports:

Paan Mandi, an alley market in Anarkali Bazaar, offers a glimpse of Indian bazaar culture in Lahore.

Also known as ‘Mini India’, the bazaar is well known for its Indian products that attract a large number of customers from across the city. An interesting fact about Paan Mandi is that almost all the shopkeepers there migrated from India and set up their businesses after 1947.

Paan Mandi Traders’ Association president Nawab Ali Khan, a Delhi-born 70-year-old man, told Daily Times that he was taking care of the business that his father had started in 1947. “The business in Paan Mandi has gone through several ups and downs, including the toughest year of 1965, as it is dependent upon the fickle Pakistan-India relations”, he said. He said that cable TV had increased Indian products’ demand and everyone wanted to use the soap or shampoo that his or her favorite celebrity used across the border.

Indian beauty soaps, shampoos, hair oils, hair-styling jells, fairness creams, hair-removal creams, after-shave lotions, perfumes, beauty lotions and shaving creams are easily available in Paan Mandi and have a great demand in Pakistan, said Haider, a cosmetics shop owner. He said Indian cosmetics were costlier than the Pakistani ones but better in quality. Adnan, another shopkeeper, said that small-size Indian beauty soap was priced at Rs 45 while same-sized Pakistani soap cost Rs 17 on average. But customers insist on buying the former because of its better quality, he added. “Indian beauty soaps are not manufactured by melting wax”, he said.

BuzzVines Extravaganza: A Blogger’s Cupa’ Tea

On the fabulous eve of 14th August at 5:00 PM, LMB was invited to join an informal blogger’s get together organized by BuzzVines, a brainchild of Amer Sarfraz. This was a sponsored event in Techys Lounge, and we were served with BuzzVines drink(coffee), chocolate cake and Red Bull Energy Drinks. Google, Elite Business Machines and Bramerz also held lucky draws, and my humble self won a Google Mug.

Due to heavy downpour, I managed to reach there by 6:00 PM, so I did not lose the chance to listen to Mr. Amer Sarfraz, who was sharing what BuzzVines is about and what made him pull in this idea to have some informal meeting and then Mr. S. J. Shirazi from LSE and Mr. Badar Khushnood from Google carried the conversation further. We were almost fifteen bloggers and some of us were quite senior for example Mr. Shirazi is on blogging scene since 1997. Other participants were, Ms. Saadia, Mr. Yasir, Mr. Hafiz Abdul Rehman, Mr. Zeeshan, Mr. Shaharyar, Mr. Aqeel, Mr. Waqas, Mr. Kumail, Mr. Atif and Karayadar Portal rep. We had very informative debate on indigenous issues regarding blogging. Everyone took part in conversation and all the questions were answered in the end by organizers with the hope that these informal gatherings will continue in the future.

The most interesting thing is that you can get a bouquet even at after midnight. So, the next time you forget to buy a bouquet for your friend to present him on his birthday and its late, don’t panic… just go to the PU Flower Shop near Bhekewal Morr and you’ll get it. ;-)

A Lahoree Poster from 1920s

Hey guys, hopefully, most of you know that BBC World has dedicated month of August to mark the independence days of Pakistan and India.

With many other interesting posters depicting the era before partition, there is a poster related with Lahore by Jankidass & Co from Neela Gumbad and O.K. Electric Works Limited, The Mall, Lahore, it is “from the 1920s, Congress advocated the boycotting of British goods and the embrace of swadeshi - the promotion of Indian products and traditional technologies.”

Though the poster looks quite nice with all the fans and tricycle, I just cannot figure out that how two traders could go for one poster, maybe because of ONE cause, i.e., independence? and now, can we think of sharing ads? NO WAY!!!!
