Bomb threat at Johar Town schools

Fortunately, the threat was not true and everyone is safe and sound.

—————————————————————————-

After alleging reports of a bomb threat, some major private schools in the area of Johar Town were evacuated by emergency procedures this afternoon.

Police authorities, fire-brigade, ambulance and bomb-disposal squads were immediately called at the International School of Choueifat which along with the nearby campus of LACAS shared the specifications of the described target i.e. large, elite, privately run schools falling in the Johar Town district.

Rushing parents, after hearing about the threat on a private news channel, were seen abandoning their cars in the middle of the road and running for their children some of whom had to make emergency calls to their respective homes. Everyone was in panic while the traffic in front of the school presented a scene of intense chaos.

There still have not been any confirmations about whether it was just a hoax, a real threat or some kind of a warning by a terrorist organization.

We will update you on this as soon as we get any news on the developments going on.

Discovering Lahore in the US

lahore_in_virginia_2%20copy.jpg

Momekh, only yesterday, brought a revelation to many who did not know about a small town called Lahore in the US state of Virginia. And for one Akmal Aleemi, it must have been exciting to discover something this interesting by surprise.

Mr.Akmal writes:

Columbus discovered America: I discovered Lahore in America. Both discoveries were accidental.

What everyone found mystifying was that there was a Lahore in the state of Virginia, yet none of the Pakistanis living in Washington had ever heard of it. The map was pulled out again and, lo and behold, there it was: Lahore. We did not have far to drive, in fact, no more than a mile and a half before we were in Lahore. But where was Lahore, we wondered, because all we could see was a cabin, a filling station and a few scattered houses. There were five or six girls playing on a patch of grass. We got out of the car and I asked one of them to come closer. The others followed their friend. “What is your name?” I asked. “Doris.” “Where do you live?” “Right here.” “Where is the city of Lahore?” “Lahore is not a city; it is a village.” “Are all your friends from Lahore?” “Yes, we go to the same church.” “You see, we all come from a city called Lahore.” “Where is your Lahore?” “Lahore is in Pakistan.” “How big a city is it?” “As big as Washington.” “We have never seen Washington.” “What is the population of your Lahore?” “Population? We have twenty-five family homes.” “Our city has millions of people living in it.” “Oh my God!” “Stand next to that sign. Can I take a picture?” “Sure.”

Until the middle of the 19th century, this area had no name, which was inhabited by about a dozen families. Their mail would often get misdelivered or even remain undelivered. A resident by the name of Phillip Marshal Jackson realised that their tiny settlement must have a name. One day while going through a book about India, he came upon the name Lahore and liked it so much that he proposed that their helmet be called Lahore. He wrote to the federal government which offered no objection to the name Lahore and, thus, the Lahore Post Office was established here in 1885.

Living in Lahore

Lahore we know, right.
It is our city, the heart of Pakistan, laorre laorre ai, payan!
Well, then what is Lahore doing in the state of Virginia?

How many of us here knew that? I didn’t. Lahore in Virginia! That’s just cheating, man, cheating I tell ya.

P.S. I don’t even know if it’s a city, a town or just some other name that the Americans came up with.

Cruel Tamasha

Brutality at its peak

Just saw this picture in Dawn and I’m totally disgusted by the so-called humanity (even if some is left in us). You don’t have to go somewhere special to see such incidents, specially in cities as Lahore. Animals kept badly is a common sight. The same animals who are extensively used for the business-keeping of their owners.

I know very clearly that we’re not talking about rich and famous here but the poor who may be living hand to mouth. But these very animals are one big source of their food and income too.

Humans can rant as I’m ranting here but what about these poor souls who can’t tell their sufferings or pains. The strangled animal here is visibly in pain. The cruelty with which its been handled and the “tamash-been” around.

Sadly, everything is a TAMASHA for us, humans or animals, whoever be suffering.

Can anything be done for these animals?? Any suggestions??

Progress on Lahore Rapid Mass-Transit System

Despite of all odds, the present Punjab Government has given much to this city as far as Rescue 1122, industrial estates, new roads, under-passes and Lahore Rapid Mass-Transit project are concerned.

According to the Punjab Chief Minister, Ch. Pervez Elahi, work on LRMTS will be starting immediately after Eid. Eid has already passed and the re-election of the present Government is uncertain too. We hope that whoever comes in power again, continues with this much-needed development of a world-class mass-transit system in Lahore.

Football World Cup Qualifier Challenge

Pakistan will fight Iraq to qualify for a rare position in the next Football World Cup to be held in 2010 in South Africa. Iraq is a strong force in Asian leg of the game and has recently won Asia Cup in July, 2007.

On the other hand, our team is trying hard to make a mark on platform of the world’s most popular sport by winning two SAF Cups and recent surprise wins over strong teams like Singapore. Besides, inclusion of six foreign based Pakistani football players in the national team should also give Pakistan some boost.

Let’s see what is the outcome of Pakistan vs Iraq – 2010 World Cup Qualifier being played this evening at the Punjab Stadium, Lahore.

More about the match at DT.

An unwelcomed guest, back again!

Yes,to our utter surprise the dengue virus spread by the bite of an Aedes mosquito is back in town. According to The News, dengue virus takes the life of a woman and 29 more tested positive.

To prevent the spread of dengue fever, you must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the Aedes mosquitoes. The Aedes mosquito is easily identifiable by its distinctive black and white stripes on their body. It prefers to breed in clean, stagnant water easily found in our homes. You can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water in your premises.

Use bednets, spray sufficient amount of Mortein Mosquito killer or a similar insecticide in your bedroom before going to bed, cover water jars if any, wear mosquiot repellent lotion, every other day change water in flower vases. Clean and scrub the inner sides of vases. Wash roots of flowers and plants thoroughly as mosquito eggs can stick to them easily and read this – Dengue facts to safeguard your family against this deadly fever.
