The legendary Zamzama or Kim’s gun is located on a platform in front of Punjab University old campus or Lahore Museum on Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam. It is also known as Bhangian-ki-Toap, the gun of the Bhangis (a Sikh misl). The great English novelist and poet Rudyard Kipling had immortalized it as Kim’s Gun. According to the legend it was cast by Shah Nazir under the orders of Shah Wali Khan, the chief minister of Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1757.

At that time, two of these cannons were cast and are said to have been made of copper and brass. The metal for these cannons was funded by the people of Lahore who were asked to give their cooking utensils. Apart from the funds it is also believed that some metal was obtained through Jizya ( capitation tax levied by Muslim rulers on the non-Muslims).

The gun is 14 feet, 4½ inches (4.38 meters) in length, with a bore at its aperture of 9½ inches (24.13 centimeters). The gun has the date of manufacture, names of the monarch and the technician along with verses in Persian molded with floral patterns all over the barrel. The gun was used by Ahmed Shah in the battle of Panipat, in 1761. After the battle, on his way back to Kabul, he left it at Lahore with his governor, Khawaja Ubed, as the carriage that was supposed to take the gun to Kabul was not ready. The other gun he took with him but that one was lost in passage through the Chenab.

After the Anglo-Sikh battle of Ferozshah on December 21, 1845, the gun came into the possession of the Britishers. When the Duke of Edinburgh visited Lahore in February, 1870, the gun was placed opposite to the gate of the museum where it rests to date.

پاکستانی فوج کے خفیہ ادارے آئی ایس آئی کے سربراہ کی حیثیت سے تاریک گوشے میں رہنے والے جنرل اشفاق پرویز کیانی نے بدھ کو چمکتی دھوپ میں جب فوج کے سربراہ کا عہدہ سنبھالا تو دنیا بھر میں لوگ ان کی اور ان کے پیشرو کی ایک ایک جنبش کو دیکھ رہے تھے۔
بری فوج کے ہیڈکوارٹر راولپنڈی کینٹ میں ایک رنگارنگ تقریب میں جنرل پرویز مشرف نے جوہری طاقت سے لیس پاکستانی فوج کی کمان کی علامتی چھڑی پچپن سالہ جنرل کیانی کے ہاتھ میں تھمائی۔

اے ایف پی کے نامہ نگار ڈینی کیمپ کا کہنا ہے کہ جنرل کیانی کو خراج تحسین پیش کرتے ہوئے ان کے پیش رو نے کہا: ‘میں ان کی پیشہ ورانہ مہارت سے واقف ہوں، یہ ایک بہترین سپاہی ہیں۔’

لیکن شاید اس کی وجہ فوج کی وہ غیر متزلزل حمایت تھی جو خود پرویز مشرف کو ‘صدر جنرل پرویز مشرف’ سے ‘صدر پرویز مشرف’ بننے کے طویل عرصے کے دوران حاصل رہی ہے کہ انہیں حاضرین کو بتانا پڑا کہ انہیں ‘یقین ہے کہ فوج جنرل کیانی کی بھی اسی طرح وفادار رہے گی جیسی کہ وہ خود ان کی تھی۔’

ان کی مصدقہ وفاداری کی وجہ سے آٹھ اکتوبر کو جنرل مشرف نے چین سموکر اور گولف کے دیوانے جنرل اشفاق کیانی کوفوج کا آئندہ سربراہ چنا تھا۔ اپنے اس انتخاب کے بارے میں جنرل مشرف اتنے پُراعتماد ہیں کہ تین ہفتوں سے جاری ایمرجنسی کے پہلے دن جب وہ عام لوگوں کو دکھائی نہیں دیے اور افواہ پھیلی کہ شاید ان کے نائب نے انہیں نظر بند کر دیا ہے تو کہتے ہیں کہ جنرل پرویز مشرف نے اس کا جواب قہقہے کی شکل میں دیا تھا۔

ایک ایسے ملک میں جہاں فوج کی طاقت کلیدی رہی ہے ایمرجنسی کے نفاذ سے سیاسی بحران میں آنے والی شدت کو کم کرنا شاید جنرل اشفاق کیانی کا پہلا امتحان ہوگا۔

ملک کی اندروی صورتحال کے ساتھ ساتھ ایک ایسی فوج کے کمانڈر ہونے کی حیثیت سے کہ جو ‘دہشتگردی کے خلاف جنگ’ میں کلیدی کردار ادا کر رہی ہے جنرل کیانی کی قیادت باقی دنیا کے لیے بھی اہم ہے۔

لیکن شاید خوش طبع مگر اپنے کام سے مطلب رکھنے والے ایک صوبیدار کے اس بیٹے کی صلاحیتیں سردست پس پردہ رہ کر جنرل مشرف کو موجودہ مشکلات سے نکالنے پر مرکوز ہوں گی۔

وزارت عظمیٰ کے دنوں میں بینظیر بھٹو کے مشیروں میں شامل رہنے والے جنرل کیانی بینظیر بھٹو اور جنرل مشرف کے درمیان شراکت اقتدار کے لیے ہونے والے مذاکرات کے مرکزی کردار رہے ہیں۔ اگرچہ اب بینظیر ان مذاکرات کے نتائج سے مکمل مایوسی کا اظہار کر چکی ہیں لیکن یہ کہنا غلط نہ ہوگا کہ جنرل کیانی کو پاکستان کے موجودہ سیاسی تناؤ کے دو بڑے کرداروں کا ذاتی اعتماد بہرحال حاصل ہے۔

نہ صرف یہ بلکہ دوسروں کی بات غور سے سننے کی شہرت رکھنے والے جنرل کیانی کو واشنگٹن میں بھی اہم لوگوں کا اعتماد حاصل ہے جو پاکستان کی صورتحال کو بے چینی سے دیکھ رہے ہیں۔

اپنے آبائی شہر میں قائم ملٹری کالج جہلم کے فارغ التحصیل جنرل کیانی نے انیس سو اکہتر میں بلوچ رجمنٹ میں کمیشن حاصل کیا۔ وہ کمانڈ اینڈ سٹاف کالج کوئٹہ اور امریکہ کے جنرل سٹاف کالج فورٹ لیونورتھ کے فارغ التحصیل بھی ہیں۔

نئے نامزد آرمی چیف کو انفینٹری بٹالین سے کور کمانڈنگ تک کا وسیع تجربہ حاصل ہے۔ سن دو ہزار ایک اور دو میں جب پاکستان اور بھارت کے درمیاں سخت کشیدگی تھی اس وقت وہ ڈائریکٹر جنرل ملٹری آپریشنز تعینات رہے۔

Everyone wants him to quit as Cheif Of Pakistan’s Army, he finally did it.

As rumor has it, Mushi was considered as a man standing on two boats…and was expected to join one, by becoming a Civilian President. Today Gen. Kayyani took over his place and he finally got retired himself from the Army.

May Allah keep our country in safe hands!!!

This (title) was one of many Pakistani and Indian songs played during this Folk Puppet Show for Kids at Rafi Peer’s festival.

Everything was so vibrant, colorful and fascinating, there were different characters from Been Walah to Snake, Sassi Punoo to Heer Ranjha.
The above-pictured duo is Ms. Laila (in black) and Mr. Majnoo, Manjoo was so thin and disheveled, if you can recognize him lying down and Laila was in search of Majnoo :)
Other famous songs included “Aj Kala Jorra Paa, Saadi Farmaayeesh Tay”, “Dafli Walay, Dafli Baja” and “Mahi Mahi Mahi, Meno Chala pawa day” :|, which i heard in the last year’s performance too. A guy was introducing the characters and then the ladies were elaborating the act by singing related songs.

The ladies were singing sweet folk melodies on the beat of dholak.

The story teller: He was introducing every character.

Though it was both in Punjabi and Urdu, and a bit difficult to get whats going on, but kids got absorbed the way it was presented. They were observing the hands controling the threads right beneath from the curtain. The act was greatly applaused and kids left with smiley faces.
