When the Sharif calls

Think of the wildest surprises and you would not be able to beat the one that I was just swept by.

Although I am not that much allergic to late night calls, still, it’s an unusual occurence when a friend calls me up after 12. And it left me wondering who the hell would be ringing me out of sleep this late at night.

The next second, I pick up the phone and say ‘Assalam-o-Alaikum!”.

Voice on the other side replies:

“Assalam o Alaikum! Mein aap ka apna Nawaz Sharif bol raha hoon. Jaisa keh aapko maloom hai keh maujooda hukoomat ……………, issi liye kal apnay keemti waqt mein say kuch lamhay nikaal kar Shair par mohar lagaye kyun kay ……………..”

Stunned at becoming the target of probably a chain late-night-mobile-call-up campaign, I could hardly beleive my ears. He actually sounded like Mr.Sharif and I would bet an A380 that it was him!

I hope I won’t be the only one to experience this when the sun rises tomorrow. Any experiences of this like? Anyone??

The Right Party Musical

Media frenzy parties spent millions on campaign adverts running prime time spots on major TV channels this elections. Which party do you think caused the most effect??

The city of footballs takes off

Sialkot, situated almost half the way to Islamabad from Lahore, is a city famous for exporting world class sports goods (read footballs), utensils and surgical instruments. Despite of its high industrial and economic status, the city pathetically lacks decent accomodation or hotels, and good logistics links with the rest of the country. But everything is going to change for the good now.

With a new Rs.40 billion Motorway link between Lahore and Sialkot in the planning stages, the city already has an international airport now.

Last year, the people of Sialkot made history by building the first privately owned airport in the country. SIAL by every mean and measure is the largest privately sponsored infrastructure project in Pakistan and speaks for the marvels industry investments into society can bring.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) started its first scheduled service off Sialkot on November 30, 2007 and from February 15, 2008, Sialkot has been brought online on PIA’s international service with weekly flights to Kuwait. Plans for a regular international cargo service are in the final stages too.

This indeed is great news for the people of Sialkot while for Lahoris, it gives us access to the facility of Pakistan’s longest runway (welcoming prospective arrival of the A380 in Pakistan) just on a two hours drive.

LMB congratulates the people of Sialkot for showing us all how citizens can make real difference and benefit from unity of economic and social strength.

Revitalising History

Minar-e-Pakistan_Renovation.jpg
Minar-e-Pakistan undergoing Renovation.
This might seem somewhat ‘patriotically incorrect’ to some but I, for one, never found Minar-e-Pakistan aesthetically pleasing. All those in favor of giving Minar-e-Pakistan a complete face-lift – even if it means taking this one down to build a new one – raise their hands, type ‘Yay’ and press ‘Post’.

(This isn’t ever going to happen, so keep the things calm if you’re emotionally attached to the current structure.)

Barri Cycle walay sarkar!

This one’s a rather new installation on the Canal near Doctors Hospital Underpass adding to the obviously most visible party symbol in Lahore; the Bicycle.

I initially thought it might be a new construction site for which they might be putting picture of the master plan…
