Certified chronic dementia patient - True by hs own admission (not being discussed by any talk show hosts - strange) However, will not be the first Pakistani President to be high while serving. There are quite a few names but the most notorious one was Ghulam Mohammad. He was a sex maniac, had a bedroom beside his office, had an American Secretary and loved Kushta's (to sustain his manhood) presented to him by hakim's from all over the country. Eventually, over consumption of exotic herbs was the cause of his death.

“Power monger dictator” tough but stale words and they don’t apply to Mush. The eight years when Mush was in power, he did more for democracy, de-valuation of power than anybody else in the history of this God forsaken country. Whatever freedoms we have today are due to his vision for this country. We had four election in eight years, we saw military gradually sent back to barracks from organization like WAPDA and KESC. They were even counting schools in Sharif’s days or have you forgotten? Its true, He did not want to hand over to known thief’s and tried his level best to keep them out, but if people want them the can have them. Its very easy to be an idealist and use such terms as Aamriat and Jamhore, what nonsense!!. I was a passionate leftist once, and saw how the first Bhutto harmed the progress of this Nation by nationalizing our economy and education. All that just by using slogans, and when the real merciless dictator came to power all the revolutionaries fled to Europe and North America and contributed by singing Hum Dekheingey with Iqbal Bano.

Democracy is not a fruit that can be taken form a tree. To flourish it requires a strong middle class and a thriving merchant community. And we don’t have to invent anything, just look at Malaysia, Turkey, China, Singapore and UAE. All these countries are progressing and they are not even true democracies. The key is to setup shop in such a way that the middle class eventually takes over. That was happening in Pakistan, we for the first time had our brain power returning to homeland and contributing with ideas and investments forming new companies and businesses. But that’s all gone now, people waited, 2 months after the last elections, the boat was steady but when the new finance minister Ishaq Dar opened his mouth, all said enough!. Investors are like a flok of birds, they carefully scan the ground and land one at a time, One Shot they fly away in mass. If you look at my comments on this blog just before and after the Feb elections, I pleaded with the crazy zealots and predicted that this will happen if they did not listen, now its too late.

If the country has to progress then the middle class needs to stay focussed, work hard at what they are doing value merit and take the country forward. If on the other hand they get tangled in idealistic nonsense, and watch too much political talk shows, chances are they will be politicised and exploited by both extremes on right as well as left.

As for the baloney, just ask Mr. Sharif to explain where the money came from to dislodge the first BB government. I think the figure was roughly 10 million dollars. That’s one of the main reasons why his file will not be cleared for Prime Ministership of Pakistan.

Idependent Judiciary – Keep on dreaming bro, that’s the most corrupt segment of our society which directly feeds on peoples misery and will take longest to fix. If you expect leadership and a quick fix from them then God be with you. It takes hard working people with ideas to take the nation forward not people who have nothing to do but criticise and point fingers.

Kammi, so what’s you solution? Bring back the dictator? I say if Nawaz is corrupt then let INDEPENDENT judiciaries decide that and if he is truly the thug that you think he is then hang him! And osama giving funds to nawaz is pure baloney. Please provide a CREDIBLE source!

Unfortunately the unlighted moderate Pakistanis like you feel somehow that a power monger dictator is a better option then ELECTED officials. If we believe in democracy we have to accept the mandate of both PPP and PML-N along with all elected parties. At the end of day we all love our country and want the best for her, but I am sorry that I strongly disagree with the path you have chosen.

Mr. Paracha you talk of surveys, I have posted all the stats here

lahore.metblogs.com/2008/08/18/a-fair-goodbye-from-mushy/

Who say marginalizing the fanatics can be done only by millitary means. The fanatics thrive on public sympathy for their cause and there is quite a lot of that in the Pakistani society. Our major political parties still don’t have the guts to call terrorists – terrorists and our media still treats the Arab crack pots like royalty + scholars / political leaders dish out justifications for suicide bombings. All the nations that have been victim of suicidal terror have stood behind their governments and said "No". Even in a place like Iraq, people are cleaning up this mess. however, as long as people like you continue to blame suicide attacks on someone and come out with a handy justification - the problem will grow. Let me remind you its not our troops but the fanatics who went on a planned offensive in the election year of 2007, so far they have met with substantial success in achieving their objectives. Also, they are not alone; they have powerful political fronts in Pakistan. Jihaadist like Hameed Gul and Jamaat-e-Islami and to some extent PTI, recent infiltration in PML is also very alarming. Although its also a known fact that Osama has provided substantial funds to Mr. Sharif in the past.

No country is without problems, be that economic or political, same is the case with Pakistan. Pakistan’s economic problems dramatically changed from what they were in 1999. At that time it was a destitute country begging for money to meet quarterly IMF deadlines, on the other hand, banks were giving yellow cabs for free to the political workers and every major financial institution was on the verge of collapse. There were grand govt sponsored scams like "Qarz uttaro Mulk Sanwaro" , "Saver Raffle", "Vision 2010" and "All projects to Daewoo" - all this conveniently forgotten . Now there are problems too (I quote):

“Now Pakistan faces higher quality problems—the problems of success. Demand has risen faster than supply. This has shown up in high inflation and a zooming trade deficit. The “tight fiscal, easy money” formula to get growth going needs to be “tight fiscal, tight money and credit” to sustain rapid growth. Idle domestic production capacity allowed the rising demand to be accommodated by rising capacity utilization in cement, steel, fertilizer, textiles, automobiles and motorcycles. Now that capacity is more than fully utilized, resulting in backlogs and imports”

But this quote applies to 2007. In 2oo7 the world economy was turned on its head by the spiralling oil prices, which no one predicted or made allowances for. However, sensible nations even in Africa have dealt with the situation and did not turn the apple cart. The same is not true for Pakistan, we will soon be back with IMF from which we escaped in 2004. That was done with our own privatization money and every cent is accounted for. My friend relief to the common man only comes through economic activity, which is now dissipating at an alarming rate.

To top it off the real problems are: living in denial, blame everything on US mentality and sympathy for fanatics. So its very appropriate that we have a certified chronic dementia patient as the President of this country and an equally corrupt + stupid personality as the new leader of the opposition

@kaami, Oh yes, the good old common sense. The same common sense that has brought this country on the brink of civil war/daily suicide bombings and our policy of ‘marginalizing the fanatics’ by conducting genocide through our own army has certainly worked wonders!!!

But wait, what about 6.5% growth? It is hardly any surprise that the genius behind this growth (hint: mr. world bank) has not graced this country with his presence since he left power for obvious reasons. There was this survey in Dawn back in 07 (before elections), which highlighted the fact that all this talk of economic growth during Musharraf’s regime was rubbish as it had brought no relieve to the common person in Pakistan. I can certainly find that survey for you if you wish.
