PAF on high-alert: Lahore’s ready for defense!

Defenders of the Green Skies - Source: PAF Website

Pakistan Air Force today conducted vigilance exercises throughout the central Punjab and North-Eastern parts of the country including Azad Kashmir. We all saw as fighter jets swooped the skies over Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, boosting the public morale and the feeling of patriotism and pride among the citizens. People climbed up the roofs and at some places shouted slogans in favour of the armed forces as all Civil Aviation activity was stopped for at least 25 minutes all across Pakistan.

Only yesterday, Indian political leadership including Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi and Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee went more aggressive in declaring that India has not ruled out an option of offensive strikes within Pakistan fueling the tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbours to new heights. This comes after repeated claims of the Pakistani Government that India has not yet shared any information or evidence relating to involvement of any Pakistan-based group or individuals. Accusations of a Pakistani hand behind Mumbai attacks did not surprise us as Pakistan has become used to the Indian rhetoric and many times, false allegations ignoring the basic fact that Pakistan is itself at war with extremist elements and terrorists on its Western front and inside its own cities and towns.

Pakistan Air Force’s flights over three major cities and Azad Kashmir this afternoon are both symbolic and extremely important a response to reports that India has started moving its forces to bases near the Pakistani border areas and that it might conduct offensives as deep as in the vicinity of Lahore; our home town; Pakistan’s heart and the country’s second largest city.

Finally, we have made it clear that we love peace but our forces won’t sit idle if any Indian adventure in our country’s territory is undertaken.

Peace; but not on the expense of our country’s sovereignty and defense…

    Yes we are indeed a peace loving nation, the record speaks for itself. We live in absolute harmony within and our contribution to collective human knowledge and progress knows no bounds. We settle our disputes like any civilized nation and openly condemn terrorism in any form or shape. As a nation we know where are we going and in 10 years we will be the strongest and the most prosperous nation in the whole world. That is the reason why we are the envy of powers that be. Every body is so very jealous of our achievements and wants to destroy and belittle our contribution to human development.

    Coming back to reality, I’ll repeat what I have said before:

    I don’t think its in India’s interest to wage a war now, they have too much at stake, however, what they can do is threaten with troops deployment, to which we would have to respond. But, unlike 2001 India will have quite a few advantages:

    1/ Over the past one year or so the state of Pakistan has become considerably weakened. Although we can respond but any mass scale troop movement will hurt us very badly. It will be a huge burden.

    2/ We are diplomatically isolated like we were never before. Even China might say, what the heck let them have it. Iran has already sent us a strong message to clean up our act.

    3/ In continuation of point (1) we will go into further debt and will have to oblige the lenders. High alerts cost billions.

    4/ There is considerable political disarray between and among the various political (looting) parties, since the one consensus point Musharraf is no more. There is no consensus on any other issue.

    5/ India also has the unique advantage of not having to explain any of its actions, our President and Prime Minister can do all the explaining.

    So it’s a win, win for India without having to go to war.

    Alternately, we as a nation can clean up our own mess, reign in our terrorists / jihadists, adopt a progressive attitude, shed our ideoligical nonsense and make it a win win for every body.

  9. binaryzero on December 23rd, 2008 @ 7:47 pm

    @kaami –

    who said "We are the greatest threat to ourseleves and the enemy:" this was from ourselves – so you are denying the hand of our enemies and arab/chechan people in NW.

    We are a peaceful nation, but if India wants a war – lets have and see who’s afraid of it. Either way we have to die one day – so not die in fighting against your enemy.

  10. sceptic on December 23rd, 2008 @ 8:32 pm

    Kaami, well put. We are a peaceful nation, in deed.

    Our everyday life, our traffic, our streets everything speaks of our tolerance and absence of violence. Our rhetroic, some of it at display at this forum, is far from reality. We are strong on slogans but hallow on actions.

    "The peaceful nation" is currently fighting a (half-hearted?) war against its own home-grown terrorists at places like almost all of NWFP all available means; against religious fanaticism and violence elsewhere, against lawlessness everywhere. You name an incident of terrorism in world from Madrid to London to Islamabad to Kabul to Kashghar to Mumbai, it would have its tantacles link to our peaceful country.

    We have fought active and cladestine wars throughout our existence agianst India; have been actively and militarily involved in Afghanistan for more than three decades now; we don’t get along well with any of our immediate enighbours, except China – than too because of our immense dependence on them.

    The peaceful nation has seen its elected leaders hanged and assassinated; its leaders jailed and toppled; its one flank split after a bloody civil war costing thousands of lives; the peaceful country has never even been able to live in peace with itself.

    Our F-16s will fly until we keep on getting their spareparts supplied by Washington, our economy will simply collapse before armoured brigades get properly deployed; we don’t have any strategy or means to counter imminent Indian naval blockade if our slogans (and folly) lead us to a war. Our threshold for using nuclear weapons is so low that we don;t expect our conventional capabilities to last even a week of full on conventional war.

    However, we must fight a war and flight with all our resolve, will and resources. It is the need of the hour. The war must be carroed on against the terrorism plaguing all parts of the country; religious extremism rotting our social core. History has shown that beards and peace somehow don’t mix well. We have more beards all around than ever before.

    Our goal should be poverty elimination, education and creation of employment opportunities; not an elusive utopia based on theocracy. Our youth need more career paths than an eternity amidst a bevy of virgins.

  11. kaami on December 24th, 2008 @ 12:10 am

    @binaryzero, sorry I will skip my reply, just read what "sceptic" has to say.

    @skeptic – Write on dude, a whole generation has been indoctrinated, even at places like LUMS (courtesy Msrs. Imran Khan) the religious right holds sway. Back in my time there were the progressives, we had access to Faiz, Josh , Jalib, Munto and the leftist mumbo jumbo and could hold our ground against the Jamaatee onslaught. But, this after Zia generation doesn’t stand a chance. They have been raised on a diet of half truths and false perceptions. The problem has been compounded by a steady hammering ( via media) from phonies like Shahid Masood, Amir Liaquat Hussain, Arshad Abbasi and Hamid Mir. They need to be jolted and shown the mirror. The situation has become so dire that if not a terrorist, a typical Pakistan has been turned into terrorist sympathiser, with a healthy diet of screwed up justification for inhuman acts and, equally screwed up conspiracy theories. They are blind to the threat staring them in the face, having a typical defeatist mentality.

    Hazrat Shahzaad Roy has so eloquently pointed out:

    “Kutch na kar, kutch na kar tou, sub kutch Allah pe chor de, Allah hee tera hafiz hey”

    @To all, rest assured that there will be no war, but the screws will surely be further tightened. And its not one country holding the screw driver, its the whole world!

    I’m not saying we have to fight this taliban but there’s more to it than just simple URLs – i would rest my comments since being more informed.

    for india, if they want a war let them bring it on. they can just start it, end would be decided by us.

  14. mozang bijjli (gadhishahu) on December 24th, 2008 @ 8:44 am

    agree with binary zero

    what kaami and his camp is saying is correct but it can not be a reason for us to bow to india. We will fight this war with shoes sticks and home made bombs of which we are world renowned experts. But all this rhetoric against talibanism jehadisam is sadly out of place here. We need spirit of jehad to fight against the economic militio-econimic monster of india.
    If she does not launch a war against us we must still do an economic jehad against her to be able to see her in eyes if similar occasion rise in future.

    By the way Kaami I have read manto, faiz sahir and all other inqalabi writers but unfortuntely they faild to quench my hate for india.

  15. sceptic on December 24th, 2008 @ 5:36 pm

    "We will fight this war with shoes sticks and home made bombs of which we are world renowned experts."

    A nice slogan.

    "If she does not launch a war against us we must still do an economic jehad against her to be able to see her in eyes if similar occasion rise in future."

    An "economic jihad" cannot be fought when we have to borrow money from IMF on regular basis to run the government; when we have to beg Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran for oil on deferred payments; when we have to depend on imported wheat; etc.

    Slogans are easy; cost us nothing. While we keep on threatening to annihilate India with sticks, India is never going to enter into any war with Pakistan. Indians know it would be contrary to their national interest of economically and industrially developing the country to undertake a military adventure. They know well that a war is the biggest repellent of economic investment and financial confidence.

    While Indians are not foolish enough to launch a war but let us suppose it eventuates and what would be the scenario in Pakistan a week later.

    • Pakistan would have exhausted its petroleum reserves due to extra consumption military mobilization and hoarding for profiteering.
    • Due to the naval blockade of Pakistani ports, all imports would stop and the country would be unable to replenish its fuel and food supplies.
    • There won’t be power supply in the cities both due to lack of furnace oil needed to run our power plants and due to Indian airstrikes aimed at crippling our power infrastructure;
    • There would be shortage of food – a roti may be priced between Rs 20 Rs 40 – due to the damage to our road and rail infrastructure that would prevent the movement of food supplies from agricultural area to cities; and due to the Indian naval blockade.

    By the of the second week, pressure from hungry and demoralized public would destroy law and order in the country and the Indian armoured division would be on the brink of bisecting geographically shallow Pakistan into two by capturing the strategic GT Road around Wazirabad, having already capture most of Sialkot, Shakargarh, Lahore and Kasur, not to mention hundreds of square kilometers in Thar. In these circumstances a humiliated Pakistan would have no choice but to commit a suicide by launching a nuclear first strike on major Indian cities with consequential Indian retaliation at almost every corner of Pakistan. But before this dreadful scenario could unfold Pakistan under the pressure of circumstances would beg the intervention of the US and beg for soft-terms to surrender a la 1971.

    Yes, some of our Jihadis would be able to penetrate Indian cities to repeat the incidents of Mumbai but their actions would not deter a determined India. Surely, India would face still military resistance during many ground battles but Indian firepower and lack of fuel supply and inadequate ammo would cripple Pakistan. In addition, Indian would be successfully able to spread Pakistani troop too thin by opening several fronts along the border.

    I may be completely wrong in my analysis but do we really want to have a war to see if Pakistan does not fare as bad.

  16. kaami on December 24th, 2008 @ 8:56 pm

    @mozang bijli

    Nobody is advocating bowing to any body. Just do the right thing, get out of this mould of self righteousness, don’t let your land be used by God knows how many clandestine orgs and millitia’s, don’t let loose out of control maniacs on the rest of the world. If there is to be a fight for a cause, so be it. Fight as a honorable nation, go to war if you have to using your institutions that are meant for that purpose. Don’t try to subvert and use brain washed robots to act as your proxy. Live, die, fight and behave like a civilized nation. Remember, if the state of Pakistan is taken over by "Extra-State Elements" then State of Pakistan is no more. Why have this army, airforce, navy and police when we cannot establish our writ within?

    Put your full weight behind the Kashmiri cause, support them politically, raise your voice for them at every forum, put diplomatic,political and millitary pressure on India to address their plight. Again, fight if you have to but don’t let your cause be hijacked by some out of control millitia or terrorist group. We have shining examples of how "movements" can succeed, remember, how Nelson Mandella freed his people? How Pakistan came into being? How many suicide bombers did Jinnah used? How many inhuman-terrorist acts were committed by the Polish Solidarity movement?

    My friend hate makes you blind and erodes your judgement, its an emotion that brings out the worst in humans. Nazis were driven by hate and screwed up ideals, they lost because the allies fought with a clear head.

    @scepteic
    Yet again you are the man!

    I think no one will win the war, but make no mistake we will bury the enemy in our backyards, for World’s largest army, 17 miles will be 17 million miles like in every war for India, Pakistan army has never allowed India to enter Punjab, and I think there will be no change in this tradition, and this time we got FATA division, waiting in ranks, to be unleashed on enemy.

    @ Kaami camp

    Do you people rule out morale from the military warfare, I am thankful that none of you guys are responsible for our defence (atleast thats what im hoping). Because ‘he who does not hope to win has already lost’. and this is what is being done to our nation enmass for years on end. Kaami is worried about jihadi doctorine instiled into youths mind but he very conveniently overlooks the frutsration and gloom growing into our youth. go to any city in pakistan and take any road or street you will find battalions of ablebodied young men just loitering around the corners, thy do’nt do anything, they shirk work becasuse they think work will not earn them respect in the eyes of society. so what option they have? it is us kami, sceptic and I who have neglected this youth and now we are crying over talibanization.
    Kaami since you are so sensitive about the notions of history in young won’t u think their frustration and gloom is much heavier a burden on nation than their messed up history. what they are doing now??? what potential we are letting to rot in our streets is going to be history very soon because the moment we are living is history. It is more important to give them a vision and direction for the future instead of filling their brains with one history or another.

    I do’nt see jihad or terrorism as an offense against our nation but what i cant forgive is the discontent among its people and this discontent is spread by our people through their incessant compliants, every body is complaining of one thing or another and what do we get in the result we got a lost generation with no direction what soever because they have listened to so many complaints and lack of faith statements on pakistan that they do’nt believe anything good can ever come out of her. . We got to give them direction instead of cramping them with texts, we must give their potential an outlet. We got to tell them to stop looking for Govt initiative, good private sector openings or a multimillion business but they have to have self respect to be able to start a small business of their own and work towards its growth. They got to be self reliant and hard worker. How do u think china grew its youth worked madly and what our youth is doing.
    When u complain of pakistan’s miserly economy do you see a sea of human resource wasting because of lack of interest. an american friend of mine asked me a question that on his visit to karachi he was shocked to see so many able bodied healthy young man just roaming around the street corners, How a family runs in pakistan if men do’nt work?

    My friends for an economic jehad agianst india I am all set, i want youth to get education and work for themselves the young entrepreneurs will join together to take our economy to a take off.
    Im not too old and a woman too but im doing my bit for the country’s economy.

  21. Hasan Mubarak (hasanmubarak) on December 25th, 2008 @ 4:43 pm

    I agree to all different view-points that you guys have expressed here but disagree with some too. We have problems of our own, there is no doubt about that and no one is denying the damage we are sustaining internally due to fundamentalism, terrorism and sectarianism. However, this does not justify any one to build up military on our borders and blame us for even a sparrow’s murder. Just look at what Interpol and British agencies say about the so called evidence that Indian authorities are claiming to be the justification of waging a war against Pakistan. The evidence in our favor is that there is no evidence of credibility on the Indian behalf.

    We need to be very clear to repel any military intrusion whether it is by India or by American drones – it should not be tolerated at any cost. And differences aside, we all need to be united to take a stand and make our point heard to our own Government, India and the International Community.
