Things that will never change in Pakistan, no matter which city you live in: the post-12 am crank calls. You pick up the receiver, say a random hello. The voice at the other end sounds oily, and you try to place it in vain as he breathes a “heaylo”. You ask “aap ko kiss say baat karnee hai?” (“Who do you wish to speak to?”), and get the one reply you’ve been dreading: “aap say” (“with you!”) The introduction of CLI has drastically decreased the number of crank calls that you get on your landline atleast, but now there’s a more harassing, stubborn breed of people hell-bent on talking to you at ungodly hours of the night, even on cellphones where you can easily track them down. I guess the latter’s not a threat as such for them anymore.

Everyone has their own way of dealing with the particular string of calls that follow the inevitable first hanging up. What’s yours?

The first noori concert off the peeli patti tour was goood. TOOOOO short, but good. (i think it lasted an hour and a half max). Ali Noor first did an acoustic set, three songs, without his band, just to get the crowd going – all old stuff. Then they played some new stuff, but not a lot. I think the division was more like 70/30, in favour of old stuff. One of the best moments in the concert was

when Ali Hamza did a solo song, and after he was done, people in the crowd yelled out “Ali Hamza ROCKS!”, and he took a bow. He’s so the sweetheart of the band.

The lights were a bit iffy though. And the gig ended with gaana number 1, no encores (:().

Pygmalion was on at alhamra this friday night – (the same play that was made into the movie My Fair Lady) and they decided to make it a musical. Big mistake. The girl who played the lead role – Eliza Doolittle – couldn’t sing to save her life. Half the time, the violins drowned her out. (the good part was they had live violinists playing). She couldn’t do a cockney accent either, though, to be fair, that was probably too much to expect of any Pakistani girl.

The professor – Professor Higgins – carried the play. He was just the right (believable) amount of arrogant. The stills too, were nice. They did cut out an entire scene at the end, and made the play end at a startling note – they didnt let eliza end up with professor higgins. Instead, the play ended with the professor proclaiming his love for her, and her walking off the stage at the end.

You can read more details about the play at the Daily Times review of it. The last bit, the summary of the play though, does no justice to the undertones suggested both in the play as well as in the staging of it. It was almost satirical, messing with the idea of how easy it is to gain access to “high society” by just learning their language and mannerisms. There was a human service message in there too somewhere…about treating people not like flower girls or princesses but you know, like humans.
Or something.
