blogger blocked in pakistan
For atleast a few days now, a number of people have been unable to access blogger sites (.blogspot.com urls) throughout karachi and in lahore as well. In Lahore, I know for sure that Brainnet and Worldcall are blocking blogspot urls BUT I can see all blogspot urls fine using WOL
Here’s a more in-depth article on the hows and whys: http://anon.free.anonymizer.com/http://spiderisat.blogspot.com/2006/03/blogspot-and-other-sites-blocked.html (thanks Huma, from the karachi metblog :)
However, a friend of mine’s found a way to access blogs: just go to http://vtunnel.com, and type in the url that you’d like to see,and they open it for you.
i think its more to do with PTCL than worldcall or brain ..WOL has its seperate arrangement and they are not entirely dependent on PTCL..if you check with WC, they have no idea abt this ban..
somebody told me that there were ppl running political blogs.. very strongly criticising govt.. and thats why they have banned entire blogspot .. not sure if thats really the reason though
shameful it is
Darwaish, do you dare saying that our minister of communication or whatever even knows how to browse a webpage at his own than to think that Political blogs (thankfully there are few around) can threaten the Bush-Mush meeting or whatever. Well, in that case, the bloggers of Pakistan need to be flattered, honestly. But of course, they can still use different proxy solutions including Google Translate.
For all blogspot users in Pakistan, you may access, post and view your blogs by using CDN & the following url to the blogspot address:
http://blogspot.com.nyud.net:8080 or http://blogspot.com.nyud.net:8090
for example:
http://sajshirazi.blogspot.com
add .nyud.net:8080 to the end of it like:
http://sajshirazi.blogspot.com.nyud.net:8080
the html pages come after the slash like:
http://sajshirazi.blogspot.com.nyud.net:8080/2006/03/blogspot-and-other-sites-blocked.html
NYUD is developed by CDN – Content Distribution Network which is peer-to-peer content distribution network, comprised of a world-wide network of web proxies and nameservers. It allows a user to run a web site that offers high performance and meets huge demand. CDN & the NYUD block is an academic testbed built on top of PlanetLab by the Network Systems Group at Princeton University. Currently, proxy servers have been deployed on many PlanetLab nodes. These proxy servers behave both as request redirectors and server surrogates. They cooperate with each other and collectively provide a fast and robust web content delivery service to NYUD users.
Blogspot users in Pakistan have 3 main open/stable located close to them:
2 main nodes and 5 sub nodes based in India (ERNET & IIT Bangalore)
1 Main node and 3 sub nodes based in Lebanon (AUBNET – beruit)
You find the network status of these nodes over here:
http://mapcenter.in2p3.fr/planetlab/
the node alarms don’t work currently as the mapserver is down – [sorry!]
Let me know how it goes :)
Cheers!
purple balloon, this friend of yours sounds very smart. i would like to meet up with him/her :)
Speculations. More speculations!
Actually, few blogs at blogger were carrying blasphemous cartoons and GoP in response ended up blocking (using their same inefficient IP-blocking technique) the whole blogger network. Nothing more, nothing less. Pity that we have same old pathetic jughead politicians on IT Ministry who don’t know a shit about technology!
This comes as a complete shock!! And I thought Blogger was undergoing some kind of maintenance!! :O Talk about freedom of expression.
An utter shame…Thanks for providing a way to view blogspot sites..wonder how long this will go on?
madness – sheer sick people out there making such policies..
i add my help – visit http://www.kproxy.com
Is it back yet?
I hope all you muslims convert to your original religion (of your ancestors) and that Islam is removed from your country and indeed from the face of the world..
Islam is the new threat that threatens world existence…
When I open my site with the help of vtunnel it comes allright but when I do that with my own browser the last post and the recent changes don’t come … does that have something to do with the ban?
This ban is absolutely shocking and sickening …(not to say of course that I’ve got a high opinion of my government)
Yes …yes … now none of the blogger sites are coming … gosh … but anyways vtunnel is there

i still cant believe PTA has screwed up so badly. i feel like killing someone.
Pakistani bloggers are rapidly organizing to launch a media protest against the ban. I’m sure we’ll be successful. We cannot allowed this to go on any longer.
