3rd Panj Pani Theatre Festival

I attended this wonderful Punjabi festival last year. Be sure to attend atleast two to three of the plays.

“The third Panj Pani Theatre Festival featuring 22 performances by Indian and Pakistani theatre groups will open at Alhamra Art Centre with Indian group Rang Manch’s play ‘Dulla Bhatti’ today (Friday), Ajoka Theatre’s Madeeha Gauhar said in a press conference.

She said the weeklong festival’s theme this year is ‘beyond borders’ and it will feature 139 artists from seven Indian theatre groups, who will arrive in Pakistan according to their performance schedule. Madeeha Gauhar said Ajoka would perform its new production ‘Surkh Gulaban Da Mausam’ during the festival, and Ajoka Children Theatre and India’s Springdale School would play ‘Border Border’.”

Pakistani theatre groups participating in the festival are: Tehrik-e-Niswan from Karachi, Bahwalpur Theatre, New Jhok Theatre from Lahore, Interactive Resource Theatre from Lahore and Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) theatre workshop students. Rang Manch from Amritsar, Adakar Manch from Mohali, Alternative Living Theatre, the Chandigarh School of Drama, The Company and Rangakarmee from Calcutta will come from India.

Prominent Indian stage actor Kaiwal Dahaliwal told reporters that the festival would be held in Amritsar in September.

Patiala University’s Punjabi Department Head Satish Verma said he had compiled a directory of Indian and Pakistan theatre groups.

Indian artists said Pakistan’s popular theatre was not liked in India, where people preferred social issue-based theatre.

Madeeha said 40 theatre artists had reached Lahore via the Wagah Border and Indian artists were given police reporting visas mistakenly this year instead of non police reporting visas. However, she thanked Indian and Pakistani governments for their cooperation.
