Thursdays and Rains

Loosely translated that is, I believe Jumaayh Raat ki Jharri means Thursday downpours that last the whole day through. Its a saying supposidly, that once it begins raining on a thursday you can rest assured that it is not going to stop anytime soon. Now,this is the first time I have heard of this here saying, are you familiar with it?

Not that I am complaining, not at all. What I would not give to escape the current unattractive hair-frizzing humidity for a week ago’s cool and constant rain shower. Flashback shall we to the previous thursday? So there I was, exploring the well-known Anarkali Bazaar, for the very first time when it began raining hard. Turns out Anarkali Bazaar is a delight for anyone looking for true-blue khussas, fine leather chappals, embroidered cloths fitting for a bride, imitation jewelry, casual slippers, and much more. Even if you are not particularly interested in shopping, the Bano Bazaar Fruit Chaat (salad) is a delicious snack that should not be missed. Infact thats what I was giving my taste buds a taste of when suddenly a drumming sound came from above. We looked up to find the green plastic cover sheltering us all from a downright pounding rainfall. All was fine up until I had to make my way about a block down to my car, under the open sky. Then, while negotiating and bustling my way (courtesy of the shopping bags) down, I noticed that most everyone was walking willingly with their heads uncovered. I figured, “When in Rome…”, slowed down, and sidestepped into the rain for the rest of the way. Sure I risked getting drenched and sick, but at that moment it was perfect. All the stickyness of the previous Lahore’s summer evenings were forgotten, and in my opinion, The Mall never looked lovelier then when view from a rain spattered window at night.

Hopefully history will repeat itself, and we will be in for another rainshower in Lahore today. *fingers crossed*
