Fiber Outage

fiber-thumb.jpg

There have been a fiber cut in the city which took the internet away from all starting from 2 PM till 4 PM today. According to PTCL resources, there were two fiber cut :

– Lahore – Karachi
– Lahore – Multan

Services has been fully restored at 4 PM. As we all know out internet goes via Karachi (via Submarine cables), so this outage paralyzed the technology activities in the country for all service providers. Inter-City connections were working fine (via which i was able to connect to Lahore office and route my internet via Satellite :P).

Yes, net was down. Okk, so this was the reason. But cant we have our own sattelites, its so annoying when nothing works?

yup its so annoying at times, technically you can restore service via Satellite but you cannot have a full-duplex satellite (means both up and down) in PK until approved by Pakistani Govt. which is mostly used by Govt. Dept. and Security services.

So in words, you cannot have satellite at home or general office (like ISP etc..) :) – we have to live with the monopoly of PTCL & Govt.

oh why do you wanna do that :P , basically the frequency spectrum is protected by ARMY signals core & PTA. Illegal & unlicensed use can disturb the security services communication use by ARMY or other organizations. So illegal users of frequency spectrum are oftenly picked up by intelligence agencies and i am sure you don’t wanna end up like that :)

    From cost perspective, 1 E1 (on Fiber) = 1200$ and on satellite 1 E1 (Full Duplex) = 10,000$ (this does not include the transponder & ODU/Dish etc…cost). From an E1 i mean 2Mbps.

lol, its just the way it is :P bit complex and need some IT background.
