Bye Bye, GEO & ARY!

When IMB’s A for [pine]Apple broke the news of GEO TV closing down last night, it was a reality hard to believe.

Due to enormous pressures by the Pakistani Government, the Dubai Government has decided to pull the plug on uplinks of Geo TV and ARY networks.

GEO TV, Pakistan’s premier Urdu news channel, also seen round the world as the main source of news and current affairs, was shut down at 1 a.m. Pakistan time (12 midnight Dubai time) after President Pervez Musharraf put tremendous pressure to silence a media outlet which had refused to bow down to his dictates.

Informed sources said President Pervez Musharraf himself intervened to stop all GEO news transmissions from Dubai, after a two-week standoff in Pakistan during which all major news channels were shut down by cable operators, who are directly controlled by the Pakistani authorities.

The shutting down of the Geo News was universally condemned by almost every political party and member of the civil society minutes before the anchors, almost in tears, signed off ——– The News

I have never been a GEO fan. I found their dwindling standards appalling, their copying the hindi lab-o-lehja and format for some of their newstainment (isn’t that what they call those news-like programs) shows disgusting, and their penchant for sensationalism just as irritating as the Indian media’s. It was a bad channel that had a few good programs too, and it has been shut down for feigning to stand up to the dictator.

However I may dislike GEO, the shutting down of this channel is another step into the draconian years that are market by a despot at the helm – hopefully it is also one more nail in his coffin.

    What next? The Internet?

what do you mean by what next?

geo has gone of air not cos they were banned but cos they failed to sign the CoC.
once they sign it they will be back

and the CoC doesnt have anything to do with critizing the gov.
aaj tv and dawn came back yestoday and they are allready critizing the gov,
dawn just showed news about geo and ary being taken down.

@SUH: Unless you are big fan for Sher Afghan or Musharraf and the state-sponsored terrorism that is being orchestrated by the GHQ, you would understand why GEO refused to sign the order!

But then some people prefer fascism because they love being told what to do — it makes life simple.

Good for GEo. MUsharraf was so lenient…there was full freedom of SPEECH but the channels abused it, they INDEED BECOME a POLITICAL PARTY…GEO become GEO BENAZIR>>>FUNDED by BENAZIR so if YOU were the President, will you tolerate it….That was the best thing Musharraf have done….by the way…some journalist, newscasters, don’t have manners at all…

Freedom of expression is everyone’s right, but we should not be exploiting it, thats what GEO was doing.

Definitely! Freedom comes with a certain responsibility…
